White Helps UNCG String Together Late Season Winning Streak

The UNCG basketball team has strung together a late season charge, and has left themselves with an outside chance at a bye in next week's Southern Conference Tournament in Asheville. UNCG will need a home win over Chattanooga on Saturday and some help to stay out of a first round game on Friday.

The Spartans shot Furman out of the gym on Sunday afternoon with 15 made 3 pointers on the way to a 35 point win (84-49). On Thursday, the Spartans played one of their more complete games of the season, dispatching Samford 81-67. Here are some thoughts one those games.

If RJ White stays out of foul trouble, watch out.  When he isn't saddledwith 4 fouls, RJ is an absolute problem for teams. Sunday he made 4 3 pointers, but still pulled down 9 rebounds. Tonight, he was fed the ball in the post and was absolutely dominant to the tune of 24 and 12 (with 6 offensive rebounds).

Congrats, Nicholas. Nicholas Paulos scored his 1,000 point as a Spartan tonight. He has been a true Spartan. Things haven't always went his way in his 4 year career, but he has pressed on and made UNCG fans very proud. I hope he kicks ass on his senior night and at his last SoCon Tournament and then goes on to play many years overseas.

If UNCG shoots the 3 like they have been recently, they will cause problems in Asheville. The Spartans hit 5-6 in the second half tonight to push their lead out to 20. On Sunday, they made 15-25. They are getting good shots out of the bench players like Asad Lamont and Garrett Collins. It also helps that most of those shotsare coming from really good ball movement.

This next week should be very interesting.

UNCG Basketball Turns into Road Warriors

After a miserable January that saw UNCG go just 1-8, the Spartans have rebounded well so far in February. This week saw UNCG go on the road and beat up on the SoCon's two military academies. On Tuesday, VMI couldn't throw it in the ocean and UNCG broke the Keydet press for a lot of easy baskets. It led to UNCGgetting its most lopsided win since 2012, 85-56. They backed it up with a nice road win in Charleston at the Citadel on Saturday afternoon. After finding themselves down 45-41 with about 15 minutes remaining, UNCG finished the game on a 38-18 run to defeat the Bulldogs by 16.  Here area couple of things from both games ...

Oh Jordy ... I've always been such a huge Jordy Kuiper fan. That dude gives 100% and seems to always be enjoying himself. It'sreally a fun thing to see. Also, he's really inproved over the course of the last season and a half. He started 3 games in a row for UNCG and on Tuesday he was having a career night. That's until early in the second half when he was fouled on a dunk attempt and landed awkwardly on his wrist. He tweet a picture on Friday of him on the way to get surgery on the wrist. I would assume he's out for the rest of the season. Tough, tough break for the young man.

It's all on you now, RJ. So all RJ White did on Saturday was go off for 15 points and 8 rebounds. White has the chance to be the most dominant post player in the SoCon if he can avoid foul trouble. With a smaller bench, that's exactlywhat he'll have to do from now on.

Team ball. What a concept. On Saturday, UNCG racked up 16 assists on 30 made baskets. It led to the Spartans shooting 56.6% from the field. Tuesday night, UNCG had 21 assists on 31 made baskets and shot 47.7% from the field. See the correlation? Move the ball aroundand things work better.

Find Nicholas Paulos !!! Paulos finished the week shooting 12-17 from the field (7-9 from long distance) and averaged 17 points. He really does make UNCG go. If he's hitting, it leaves open spaces for Locke, Saddler and White.

Just a reminder that tonight's game is at 8 pm and is being broadcast by the American Sports Network (ASN). WMYV (Triad TWC channel 1245) is the normal carrier of local ASN games. However, tonight they will be showing NC State at Wake Forest at 8 pm. If you have an over-the-air signal, you can watch the game on channel 48.2. Otherwise the game will be carried streaming here.
