Just a reminder that tonight's game is at 8 pm and is being broadcast by the American Sports Network (ASN). WMYV (Triad TWC channel 1245) is the normal carrier of local ASN games. However, tonight they will be showing NC State at Wake Forest at 8 pm. If you have an over-the-air signal, you can watch the game on channel 48.2. Otherwise the game will be carried streaming here.

UNCG kicked off it's men's and women's basketball season last night in Fleming Gym with a festival style event named "Spartan Madness". Here are three things I took away from that event.
#1 - The athletics department really worked hard to get a big student turnout and they succeeded. When my group arrived at about 7:20 there was a line that started at Fleming and stretched all the way around into the Quad. The numbers that were tweeted afterwards were 1,933 and that seems very accurate. This was a very predominantly student crowd. I only saw a handful of non-students as I scanned the crowd. If the promotions people can turn out this kind of excitement for the regular season, UNCG will have a nice advantage.
#2 - The Spartans are big. Now let's get it out of the way by saying that they are very inexperienced, but this team has a lot of options at the 4 & 5 spots. Seeing them on the court live, it really was the first thing that jumped out at me. With RJ White, Kayel Locke, Ben Dickinson, Jordy Kuiper and Lloyd Burgess on the roster, UNCG seems to have the depth the deal with the foul trouble that always comes with playing in front of SoCon refs. RJ White impressed me during the scrimmage. He had a couple of nice back to the basket moves and seems to be in great shape.
#3 - Guard depth could be a real problem. During the scrimmage, CJ Coleman and Nik Brown didn't even dress out and that could be an issue. Both players suffered injuries that shortened their seasons last year and may still be dealing with lingering effects. If those guys miss extended time, we could see Jamal Mitchell or Asad Lamont pressed into action. Having said that, Mitchell made a couple of 3's during the scrimmage and looked pretty good on the court.
As an added bonus, I really enjoyed the DJ last night. I'm obviously well past the point of knowing a lot of the hip-hop or pop music that was played, but it wasa nice touch and I hope he's back for future home dates.
