Jeff Goodman has once again posted his list of secret scrimmages that will be taking place around the country in the next 2 weeks. These scrimmages are noted for the fact that the coaches are not allowed to discuss them, there is technically no score kept and no media coverage. Teams are allowed two scrimmages, two exhibitions or a combo of both. Here is the list of SoCon teams:
Saturday, Oct. 25
USC Upstate vs. Chattanooga at North Georgia
Citadel at Stetson
Presbyterian at Western Carolina
Friday, Oct. 31
UNC Greensboro at Coastal Carolina
Saturday, Nov. 1
North Florida at Citadel
UNC Asheville at Furman
Tennessee State at Samford
Liberty at VMI
Sunday, Nov. 2
Wofford at Belmont
Mercer at Georgia Southern
Young Harris at Western Carolina
Saturday, Nov. 8
Virginia Tech at East Tennessee State

Let's start with the big names and work our way down. First off UNCG will play two different teams that have each won 5 NCAA Titles. UNC will visit the Greensboro Coliseum in the second of a three game series. Last season the Tar Heels beat the Spartan 81-50 in the Smith Center. It was the first ever meeting between the schools. UNCG will also face off with the Indiana Hoosiers. The last time these teams met, the Spartans fell 71-64 in Bloomngton. That was at the beginning of the 2003-2004 season.
Beyond those two games, UNCG has set itself up with a manageable schedule with a very local feel. Elon, High Point, UNCW and Greensboro College will all make appearances in the Greensboro Coliseum. The Spartans are playing return games at ECU and Presbyterian. Since those were the two most painful games I attended last year (for completely different reasons) I will be glad not to have to see them live.
The most interesting parts of this schedule is the locations of home games and the Eastern Michigan event. First off, someone in the athletics department got the memo that these non-D1 games should be played in Fleming Gym. Let's face it, the crowds will be small and in the big Greensboro Coliseum, that dead energy and empty feel can lead to some problems.
The other interesting part is the event Eastern Michigan. It's hard to call it a tournament due to it really just being three designated games. Eastern Michigan finished last season 22-15 and made it to the 2nd round of the CIT. With Youngstown State (15-17) and Longwood (8-24) rounding out the field, it should allow UNCG 3 contests against similar teams with a chance to pick up some early season victories over D1 teams.
As always, I think these non-D1 games are still a bunch of throw always. But I also understand that those games help pay the bills. So, I guess they are a needed evil. All-in-all this looks like a 17-18 win type of schedule. Without the ridiculous row of heavy hitters, UNCG has a change to pick up some wins before the turn of the calendar and that's a good thing.

I guess for now, I'll just update the men's basketball schedule piece by piece. Here's the newest game ...
- Mars Hill University will be making an appearance in the Greensboro Coliseum on New Year's Eve. They have the game listed at 2 pm.
The Mountain Lions are a DII school just north of Asheville that plays in the South Atlantic Conference. Last season they went 6-21, but one of their wins came against SoCon foe Furman.
I'll continue to update the schedule as I get more.
