The UNCG opened the 2015 baseball season with a home-and-home series with local rival High Point. A third game was scheduled for today at UNCG, but it's been pushed back to tomorrow afternoon. With the threat of winter weather, there's very little doubt that the game will be either cancelled or postponed.
On Friday, UNCG jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 1 inning and never looked back on the way to a 12-8 victory. Ryan Clark turned in a nice performance on the mound, going 5 innings to pick up the win. The bullpen let things get a little dicey at the end, until Tyler Frazier slammed the door on the Panthers.
On Saturday, High Point scored in 6 of the the 8 innings that they appeared at the plate to win 12-2. The Spartans bullpen surrendered 9 runs (8 earned) in 5 innings of work and the defense committed 5 errors. At the plate UNCG recorded 8 hits, but could never come up with any in a big spot to get themselves back into the game.
This should be an interesting season, as it is the best the head coach Link Jarrett has put together since he's been at UNCG. Last season, defense and the bullpen was a sore spot for a good offensive team. Looks like there still could be issues in those departments again this season. The SoCon coaches picked UNCG to finish 4th. The media picked them 5th. With the SoCon Digital Network now available, keeping up with the team is much easier than ever before. I plan on posting as much baseball stuff as I can this year. Stay tuned ...
